Hello everyone. My name is Derek Yost, and I am a new addition at Platte City Middle School. I will be teaching 7th Grade Language Arts. Below is a short biography and some miscellaneous information about me. A brief history of my education: in 2010 I graduated from Savannah High School. In 2015 I graduated from Missouri State University with a degree in English Education.
I love to read and write! Language is the beautiful and complex conglomerate that binds our world together. It is a tool that we will all use in any field of choice. It is my goal to translate some of my passion for reading and writing into a great environment where students can learn in a fun, focused, and intellectual zone. We all have the capacity to succeed in English!
Outside of the classroom, I have a ton of hobbies. I am an avid sports fan, and I coach football at Platte County High School. I enjoy being outdoors, hiking, fishing, hunting, and canoeing. There is a big world out there, and I intend to see a lot of it before I leave this earth! Go Pirates!

Philosophy of Education
My Definition of Education:
Education is a system that instills a deep passion for learning. Learning happens best when competent teachers, administrators, and community members facilitate the needs of students by presenting suitable paths to achieve success. Education is a fluid process, and there is no one set way to achieve academic excellence. For education to be effective, teachers must be able and willing to find innovative, engaging, and unique ways to present information. Effective education means challenging students and encouraging them to supersede their own expectations. At the heart of education and teaching is the necessity to provide tools essential for life both inside and outside the classroom.
A Teacher’s Role:
In the simplest of terms, my job as a teacher is to facilitate learning. In the classroom, I must encourage students to become autonomous learners. By planting the seeds of independence, confidence, and creativity, I will enable students to flourish in any aspect of life. It is my responsibility to equip students with the tools, skills, and resources needed for lifelong learning. As an educator, I set an example as a motivated, focused member of society while maintaining an authoritative yet personable, friendly presence in the classroom. By investing my time and efforts into students, I can enjoy watching the growth of young adults into mature, well-rounded members of our community.
Students’ Roles in Education:
Each child and young adult has a distinctive and unique personality. Their perspectives and ideas are to be valued and respected at the highest level. By treating students as competent individuals, each one with abilities and talents, teachers create a culture of acceptance and encouragement. Investing in students in such ways means leading students to develop an inner strength and an understanding of their personal identities. Each classroom is filled with students who have diverse needs and crave individual attention.
An Effective Classroom:
Young adults need an environment that encourages and focuses on learning. Classrooms should be fueled by a desire to consume knowledge, by both students and instructors. As an educator, it is my responsibility to provide students with an environment conducive to learning by creating a safe, judgment-free zone where individuals are encouraged to express opinions, ideas, solve problems, and think critically. The classroom needs to provide resources and materials beneficial and accessible to students. The classroom should be governed by a clear set of rules and consequences that are simple and easy to follow. Above all else, teachers need to develop a classroom with a culture of respect for the needs of all class members.
